Geology and astronomy are combined to explore the evolution of the Universe and the Solar System. Comparative geologic evolution of the planets is emphasized. A significant component of the course is hands-on geologic field investigations and astronomical observations (summer) or 2-hour laboratory (academic year). Regional Geology and Tectonics: Principles of Geologic Analysis, 2nd edition is the first in a three-volume series covering Phanerozoic regional geology and tectonics. The new edition provides updates to the first edition's detailed overview of geologic processes, and includes new sections on plate tectonics, petroleum systems, and new methods of geological analysis.

The Department of Geological Sciences at CSULB is a student centered program. It provides undergraduate students with substantial laboratory and field based instruction and opportunities to participate in research, and graduate students investigate a considerable range and variety of research topics for their M.S. theses.

The sand of the Oak Openings Region of northwest Ohio is an excellent example of these beach sediments showing a distinct beach ridge morphology and many remnant dunes. The higher dunes of the region led to drier soils upon which oak trees thrived and lower wet areas where the water table is shallow which supported a wet prairie ecosystem, hence the name Oak Openings.
